Flower Show

Philadelphia has the largest and oldest flower show in the country, and it was my pleasure to attend a few weeks ago.  When the world outside looks like winter will never end, the smell of a flower show lifts the spirit.

The theme this year was Italy, and the feeling was of being transported across the Atlantic.

An Italian kitchen garden

A prize winning display.  The light boxes were full of water bottles, each with a stem of a yellow flower.  Some had vines going up the structures.  Magical!

Ah, to be in Tuscany

One of the lectures was on starting plants from seed, so I got inspired.  My room is full of baby plants, and most of the seeds have germinated.  Now to tend them until it's safely warm enough overnight to put them in the ground outside.

Last weekend Miss C, Mrs T, and I worked in the yard.  We dug up a spot for a little "square foot garden" for vegetables, and put in a few strawberry plants.

The timing of things is very different here in the garden.  I'll have to watch and wait.  Helebores that bloom in January on the Left Hand coast are just blooming now in late March along with daffodils and crocus.

Miss C loves being outside, holding your hand and walking along the grass, and she loves "the purples," crocus flowers that are growing in clumps.  Don't you love "purples," too?

"Hug" Ya Ya

Miss C brought tears to me tonight as she was eating her dinner.  She hugged herself ("I love") and said, "Ya Ya."

Ya Ya is her name for me!

Melt.  That after a loooong day without a nap.

Finds and Projects

My life here revolves around Miss C, and the shopping trips and projects are no exception.  I've been combing Craig's List for a table and chair set for this little one, and our adventure yesterday netted the perfect one.  The price was reasonable, but the drive was VERY far.  Miss C has never had so many car snacks in her life!  "Cookie?"  "Cracker?"

With the top covered with paper, it's the perfect place to make marks with the crayons.

This barn project has been on my mind for a long time, and this week, we had a barn-raising!
I found the directions on a blog, and knew I had to try it.

The animals were an earlier gift, so the barn was an obvious need.

Miss C with the "Neigh-Neigh"  All the animals fit inside, and when she's bigger,
she'll be able to carry it around.

Miss C, in the "Woof-Woof" dress I made, shaking it up.

Adventures via Craig's List

Miss C and I are driving someplace new this afternoon to buy something I found on Craig's List.  She's down for an early nap; here's hoping that works!

I have spent way too much time "shopping" on C. L.  But we have found several things that work really well here: a dining room table, chairs, and china closet, the car-seat for Gma La La's car, and a buffet for the living room.  A further report on the outcome of this afternoon's trip, with photos, will be forthcoming!

How do I get there?

Well, that question is a good one, for Miss C and for me.  I finally got a GPS, and it's a wonderful little bit of insurance.  I know I can always get home from wherever I end up.  HOORAY!

Today we ventured a little farther out to a craft store, and on the way home, stopped at an Agricultural High School, right inside the city.  We saw horses, donkeys, cows, and 3 calves that were born this morning.  Miss C couldn't get enough of the cows.  I wanted her to see just how big they are.  The students fed the newest calf from a bottle, and helped it to stand upright.

We fed horses Daisy and Belle a little grass through the fence.  The students were grooming these two horses, and we watched for a long time.  Miss C came home talking about "moo moos," "Moo Moo babies," and POOP.  Lots of poop.

Miss C at 16 Months

Miss C has many methods of locomotion -- involving various combinations of knees, one foot, hands or arms.  Quite creative.

Check your shoes before you put them on. . . . Miss C is good at adding a little something. . . .

If I get on tip-toe, I can see all the eggs in this basket. . . . . .

Miss C delights and amazes me every day.  She remembers EVERYTHING!  Today at breakfast, (oatmeal with blueberries) all she could talk about was the book, "One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry."  Now, her words aren't very clear, yet, but the meaning is all there.  She is counting to 5 for sure, understands two, names colors, and recognizes that letters are letters.  She loves the alphabet, the alphabet song, and knows that she's looking at letters: she'll say "a,"  "e," "d," "e," "b."  Her favorite book is "Whole World," which she asks for by name.  She loves the ideas of cookies, but really doesn't care to eat them.  She wants to know all about the moon.   I marvel at this little scientist in our midst.

We go to library time on Tuesdays, and I am fascinated by the difference in her demeanor when she's in an environment away from home.  Big eyes, taking it all in; she doesn't say much.  But she remembers EVERYTHING.

worry that they are always watching you."

Another Birthday

This time, it's MY birthday -- the big, "you are qualified for Medicare" birthday.  And I don't feel any older!  I had a lovely day starting with a huge surprise: a bird mobile made for me by Mrs T with technical help from Mr T.  I now have three branches of lovely patchwork birds looking over my shoulder above my desk.

More phone calls than usual filled my afternoon, then we went out to dinner at a Mexican place.  The food was so-so, but the outing was fun.  Miss C enjoyed the live music and the liveliness of the place.  Cake waited until Saturday, spreading out the celebration, and cards are coming still.
Thank you, friends!
